Nigeria Launches Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Initiative
The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification initiative to ensure that all public and private teachers nationwide undergo thorough vetting before employment. This digital background check aims to verify teachers’ criminal records, ensuring only qualified staff are employed and restoring professionalism and accountability in the education system.
The initiative will be integrated into the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal, which was launched in August. This portal enables real-time registration, distribution of licenses to qualified professionals, and timely monitoring of teacher conduct.
The TRCN digital portal is a comprehensive platform that facilitates seamless registration, professional development, and national database management. It will track and provide access to professional development opportunities and maintain a credible database of Nigerian teachers’ performance and career progression.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the background checks aim to entrust the education of future generations to individuals of sound moral character, thereby restoring integrity to the teaching profession. The TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, highlighted that the digital portal will enhance teacher quality through advanced technological features like AI-powered lesson planning.
The expected outcomes of this initiative include improved teacher quality, enhanced accountability, and increased transparency. Only qualified and morally sound individuals will be employed as teachers, teachers’ conduct will be monitored, and disciplinary cases will be handled efficiently, and teachers’ records will be digitized, promoting transparency in the recruitment process.
The launch of the TRCN digital portal and the Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification initiative solidifies the Ministry of Education’s commitment to reforming the education sector and ensuring that only qualified teachers are employed.
