FG Unveils New Curriculum for Primary, Secondary, and Technical Schools
The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a new curriculum framework for basic, senior secondary, and technical education to alleviate student overload and enhance learning quality. According to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, made this announcement on behalf of Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa.
The comprehensive review was conducted in collaboration with key agencies within the ministry, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), among others. This collaborative effort aimed to create a balanced and effective education system.
Under the new structure, students will have a more manageable course load. Primary school pupils in Primary 1-3 will take 9-10 subjects, while those in Primary 4-6 will take 10-12 subjects. Junior Secondary School students will offer 12-14 subjects, Senior Secondary students will take 8-9 subjects, and technical school students will take 9-11 subjects. This framework is designed to promote practical, in-depth learning.
Prof. Ahmad emphasized that the reforms aim to reduce content overload, give students more time to learn, and align education with global realities. She praised stakeholders for their contributions to the review process and assured that the ministry will closely monitor the implementation to ensure a smooth transition across schools nationwide. This move is expected to significantly improve the quality of education in Nigeria.
